Characteristics of Major
In the Mathematics major, students will develop foundational knowledge and skills regarding the content of mathematics in middle and high school. In specialized courses offered from the second year onwards, students will study the fundamental theories underlying the content of each field in middle and high school mathematics, from basic principles to modern mathematics.
Moreover, aiming toward consistent mathematics education in secondary education, considering the connection, systematization, and development of mathematics between middle school and high school, students will acquire theoretical and practical expertise in the subject and teaching methods. The goal is to nurture students to become educators capable of playing a leadership role in mathematics education in various school settings, including middle and high schools, and secondary education schools.
Curriculum Features
In this major, we have designed a curriculum that systematically offers courses in mathematics (subject specialization) and mathematics education (pedagogical specialization) from the first to the fourth year. The first and second years focus on fundamental content, while the third and fourth years delve into more advanced topics. Lectures also emphasize the connection between the content of mathematics in middle and high schools and the corresponding teaching methods.
In the later part of the third year and the first part of the fourth year, we conduct seminars with small class sizes. These seminars aim to enhance mathematical expressive ability, mathematical reasoning, and practical teaching skills. The goal is to equip students with suitable qualities as mathematics educators in middle and high schools.
